The Birthday Wish.

I've made mention of it before. I am jinxed. On my birthday. My mother would tell you it started with my birth. 36 hour labor. The hottest day, of the hottest month of the year. I've never heard the end of it :)

Here is just a sampling of my "jinxes."

  • When I was 4 I dropped a cement brick on my toe and spent the night in the ER getting shots in my toe and having the nail removed.
  • The year I turned 7, Great Grandma Julia died.
  • The day I turned 10, we had invited all of our relatives over to our lake for a big party. We have one pathetic picture of me hoisting a sheet cake with flushed red cheeks and glazed over eyes, right before my mother took me to the ER. Strep throat this time.
  • The next year, I got off easy. My brother took one for me and tore the ligaments in his leg the night of my party. His turn to go to the ER!

And then I stopped keeping track of which event happened which year. But do you remember the day John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Caroline and her sister died in the plane crash? July 16th. And so it goes.

Its really odd. Yet its uniquely me. And, despite the weird coincidences of all of these events happening on my birthday, I still have had really great birthdays overall. I was looking through some older photos and found the ones below. I see three candles on the cake. And I am assuming the rest of the picture were of me when I was three. I have no memories of that day. But I also have no jinx stories, so I'm assuming three was a pretty good year for me!

So if you were to ask what I wanted today for my birthday? Its really pretty simple . Lets just all make it through the day without any trips to the ER :)

  1. Maybe you should spend the day inside... reading a book, surrounded by pillows and no sharp objects...

    :)

Happy Birthday, sweet friend. You were an adorable little three year old who grew into a beautiful woman and friend. I'm so glad we all get the gift of knowing you.

  13. Happy Birthday to my best friend in the world. I had intended to surprise you today with a visit in person -- last weekend I had decided that I was going to just head up to Moorhead - spend a few days in town and just show up today and surprise you. However, after I thought about it I decided it was just too risky with Christopher -- so be forewarned - one of these days I will just show up on your doorstep. Plus, after reading your blog and all the ER trips -- well, I didn't want to be making the trip for you this year!

I didn't know you during those early jinxed years -- but what I remember are some pretty good birthday celebrations we had in July -- none of them involved the ER or anyone getting hurt....unless it was a sunburn or hurting feet from too much dancing...!!!

Once again, true to form, I bought birthday cards in June for all the July birthdays -- and here the cards all sit -- now all late...I amaze myself.

Anyhow, hope you had a wonderful birthday! Sorry I couldn't be there to share it with you.

  14. 36 hours of labor!! Oh-My-God! Now this is what scares me about having babies !

Happy Birthday Vicky! I am sure the day must have been really good! Let's not call it a jinx, but a mere coincidence!

All of your childhood pictures are SO adorable :D

We would want to know how your special day went and I would really hope it is without any major incidents :)

  15. Thank you Stillness! My husband said the same thing, they are just coincidences, which is true :) I'll work on updating! Thanks again :)
