Homecoming

*************************************************************************

Thanks for all the emails, support and prayers. My dad has his blinders on and is solely focused on his big party next weekend. He has put all thoughts of hospice on the back burner, although he qualifies to begin the services now. We are simply following his lead and letting him enjoy his independence for however long we can. I can't bear the thought of stripping away whatever shield he has erected to protect the vision for what his days look like. Instead, I find myself grabbing hold of that shield and helping him keep it in place just a bit longer.

  1. Vicky....The visions that your Dad sees are admirable. His blinders are protective and productive for him, and I feel you are an extremely loving daughter.
Hope keeps us going when we might give up. Hold onto that shield with him, my friend. He needs you more than ever...
I hope his party is the best he's ever had.
    Love,
    Jackie

  2. Now correct me if I'm wrong..is that Moorhead, MN? If so...we are so close...what a great parade!

Accolades to you for letting your dad enjoy his independence as long as he can. Amazingly, they know when the time is right..keep that shield strong for him!

  3. Hi Vicky

so tell me about the SPUDS...

I hope your preparations for your dad's big day keep his and your spirits high...

My father has rebelled against his 'internment' by not eating and frequently running away and walking home...when he gets a bee in his bonnet he runs with it not mindful of the consequences...

Take care of yourself at this stressful time..

    Happy days

  5. From what I can tell it sounds like your day is strong and I don't think he is going to let anything get in the for him and his party.

Breath deeply, smile lost and take heaps of photos.

The SPUDS event looks like a lot of fun.

  7. Jackie, I agree, hope is what we are all about right now :)

Alicia, yes, I live on the Eastern border of North Dakota, I imagine we aren't very far apart at all :) I think you are right about time, he will know and we have to trust that instinct.

Delwyn, our mascots are argiculturally based, so for high school we are the Moorhead Spuds, due to all the potatoes grown around here :) In college, I became a corn cob, Cobber :) I love hearing about your dad, he sounds very willful like mine.

Tranquility, thank you, I'll pass along your kind words to him :)

Liss, we are all going to try to thoroughly enjoy it:) I know for a fact I will be taking many photos to share :)

Stephanie, its so touching to see him pour over his list and reaching out to all the people he wants to see!

I love that he is so ready for his party and is looking forward to it....the last of any independence is something that needs to be granted and you are all fabulous for letting him have it....

  10. I don't know, Vicky. I say embrace those blinders. They may be a huge blessing to him and you, too, as they keep him from letting even one of his days be more diminished than they have to be.

Your photos and the shadow and light play, along with the vivid colors, made me want to get in the car and travel to your world. I want to be where the sun slants like that and makes everything look like it will always be okay.

    Love you, friend.

  11. Beth, so glad to hear your daughter is better :) Its great you could be there for her. Thank you for your kind words and prayers, they are both appreciated.

Janine, thank you for your offer of prayer and your kind words. I think my family would all agree that we could use fortitude, and guidance in our decisions, and the ability to move forward without fear. I'll be over to visit you shortly :) Thank you sweet friend.

Robynn, I hope you are feeling better :) I think the what you said about keeping blinders in order to not diminish any of his days is spot on... exactly right. And if my photos translated that well, I am glad... there is just something about that golden light this time of year that is spectacular. Love ya too Robynn :)

  12. Vicky: Loved the pictures! I forgot to even get pictures of the parade. That 'scary' dragon was actually the father of that little girl! Cute huh?
I agree with the other posters. Let your dad enjoy his time as he wants. Sometimes just moving ahead and not thinking of that yucky stuff, is all you need.
You take care of yourself too. I can't imagine the unspoken stress you are under.
