Rooster @ Roseau…

Colton's hair has always had a cowlick in back that makes the back of his head look like a mini-Dennis the Menace.  Or maybe Alfalfa from The Little Rascals.  He takes great pleasure in showering before bed and waking up to see how "high" his rooster tail is for the day.

I'd say he earned his nickname from his coach honestly.  Rooster it is.

This mom delighted in all his Rooster ways this weekend in Roseau, MN which is merely miles away from the Canadian border.  Its legendary when it comes to its hockey history and continues to draw crowds to its tournaments every weekend.

Friday morning we loaded up the bus and arrived in Roseau about 3 hours later, just in time to get our boys ready for their first game that night against Lake of the Woods. We played in the North rink which has the same reputation as our own North rink- much colder than the South rink.

What it is about riding the bus and getting off to go and play hockey, and then you can't find your legs? Our boys were there in spirit, but their feet and minds had clearly been "frozen" somewhere along the way.  We lost our first game.

Day 2 we awoke to sunshine and cold with the promise of snow arriving later in the evening.

This time we got to play on the South side and boy did that bring us some luck.  Luke, the other goalie,  got to be in net and our boys came from a deficit all the way back to a tie game.  But instead of playing overtime, we went straight to a shootout! I felt so much for Tara, the mother of Luke. Its so hard to see your child feel the pressure of making sure no goals get past them in a 1 on 1 situation.

But Luke, The Wall, did just that.  And our forwards buried one more puck on the other side than the other team did on our side, so we won in the shootout, over Hermantown, who was rumored to be a ranked team.  Those wins always feel extra good.

"The barn."  Full of hockey history and nostalgia.

That afternoon it was Colton's turn to be back in the net.  I shuddered as we got down by two goals almost right away.  We were going to have to play "come from behind" hockey again and that is so nerve wracking to watch.  But come from behind we did, and with seconds left in the second period we were all tied up.

Although I wasn't quite fast enough to capture it, when we finally went up 3 -2, Colton celebrated by doing a snow angel out on the ice.  Oh my stars, that kid, so cracks me up.

And this little sweet one?  Watches Colton's every move.  So when he was down on the ice doing his angel?  She laid right down and did her own version in the stands- the crowd loved every second of it.  Her little eyes, seek out Colton, and light up every time she sees him.  Its almost too cute for words.

After 2 big wins, an afternoon spaghetti feed at the Legion, and entertainment provided by the "Hanson Brothers," we were off for some fun with bowling.

Colton's coach entered his name as "Rooster," and the kid was literally beaming.  He bowled, danced and sang with the music and clearly had a wonderful time.  It was a pure joy to get to see him so thoroughly enjoying himself.

And I got to hang out with so many fun people.  This is my friend and neighbor, Anne, and I love that we have our boys on the same team this year.  Anne watches out for me always and is a true angel - as were so many other people this weekend.  Whether they helped carry in our bags, or helped get food, or encouraged Colton, or simply asked if I needed anything, it was all so deeply appreciated by Colton and I.  We are extremely grateful for the love and support we felt and continue to feel by our hockey family.

Sunday morning, after out final game and a bummer of a loss, we hit the road knowing we were about to run into blizzard conditions.  We had no idea how far we would make it before maybe having to stop and find a place to stay, but we were determined to head out.

This was our view most of the way back.  White.  Everywhere you look, the wind simply whipped the fallen snow into a frenzy of wispy, whirling, white, that clouded our vision and ability to see the sides of the roads.

This was my view- and its not because the bus windows were dirty.  It was simply that white outside.

While every highway around us was officially closed, somehow we managed to get onto Highway 10 without running into a barrier of any kind.  We could actually see the road and the sun was eerily shining through all the haze and fog of the snow.  Had we been in a car or truck, I don't know that we could have made it through.  But the bus, and our driver, were unstoppable and we made it through a harrowing ride home safely.

Colton and I wrapped in warm blankets and hunkered down in bed to watch tv and rest.  Our heat was turned down to 62, as there was a gas-line explosion in Canada that affected the supply of gas to our area.  We all need to conserve until they can get the supply back up to meet demand.  Its unfortunate the weather is so cold- well below zero- but we are bundling up as much as possible.

Mom seemed to have a good weekend.  I talked to her several times throughout.  She even managed to figure out how to go off the third floor , and go down the elevator to the main floor.  She got her mail, and walked around a bit.  She also loved having her sisters come visit, and one of my cousins.  She loves the company and the distraction to the monotony she feels.  I could hear in her voice that some energy has returned, and maybe even some strength.

Will look forward to visiting her soon.

Infusion, Dr. P, tomorrow, surgery still planned for Friday.

Here we go

Nolan's AA Peewee team played their first games of the season.  The AA division is brand new to us this year and means we will be playing some pretty stiff competition.  Every year there are pre-season jitters leading up to the first game.  How will they look as a team?  How well will they break the puck out?  How well can they move the puck?  How will they handle the increased speed and size?

Nolan's team played 3 games.  Below are just a sample of some of the hundreds of photos that Rick took.

We were pleasantly surprised- we won all three of our games.  Each weekend we will face tougher teams as we move into our season and discover the challenges of the this new district.

But the boys played well together.  Scoring came from every line and everyone passed the puck well.  Nolan's off season work has really improved his strength and speed.  While you can never turn a blind eye to all the areas that will continue to need work, its also good to notice all the areas where improvement has taken place.

We were so proud of all of our boys!  Congrats Peewee AA team!

Colton also had a big weekend of hockey.  It was the Squirt jamboree.  They have one inhouse team already, but this weekend they are all vying for 1 of 4 travel teams.  Colton played two games Saturday and two games Sunday.

Colton has really stepped into playing goalie and he loves it.  He is pretty level headed and even keeled.  He can shake off a goal by the other team fairly well and get his head back into play quickly.  A couple of his friends are in the collage below as well.

Colton's team tied twice, lost one, and won one.  He truly has embraced his role as goalie and we are excited to see which travel team picks him!

Last Thursday night, the "little" in our boys was abundantly with us.  Embracing the vulnerable, the worried, the sad helped propel us into a weekend of growth, discovery and sheer joy at watching them focus their efforts on what they love to do.

If we accept whatever moments as they come, there truly is a grace that settles in all around.

I have infusion tomorrow, and an mri of my brain on Wednesday, with sedation.  I have also realized I will need to refer myself back to wound care as it has abruptly stopped scabbing over and is open and angry looking again.  But my eye is fixed firmly on the grace certainly surrounding my days despite where and what I may be doing.  How about you?

Hockey districts and distractions

With my test being cancelled on Friday, I got to go to Fergus Falls for Nolan's opening district hockey game.  I could not have had a better weekend of distraction.  We dropped Nolan off at his game an hour beforehand and went to the one place I always turn to when the going gets tough... Dairy Queen.  Yum.

We played a Brainerd team Friday night we had previously lost to in overtime.  We were hoping for a better outcome this time, but lost to them 3-2 in regular play.

So it was an early start to our morning on Saturday with a 6:30 am drive to Fergus Falls.  But we were treated to the sun rising up into a foggy landscape.

Just around the corner from the arena is a wildlife refuge.  I would venture to say its a habitat for thousands of geese.  The sun was rising up through the mist and Rick and I both were compelled to stop and take photos.

It was breathtaking and these are my own photos. It was serene, tranquil and mystifying all at once.  I'm finding it impossible to feel burdened at times like this when nature is stunning and gratitude washes over me.

And then it was time for our game against Little Falls.  We beat them recently and were looking for a repeat.  But they gave us a challenge and it made for a nail biter of a game!  We tried to include photos of each player on the Peewee A-2 team, from all three of the games we played.

But Nolan got a full piece of this one with some awesome assists from his team mates!

Mitch, Nolan, and Sam celebrating after the goal.

Time out... we're headed into OT with Little Falls...

And we win!!! 5-4 in OT with Little Falls!  We've lost so many times in OT, this win was a victory in more ways than one!

We then took on a team from Alexandria that we've lost to every time we've played them.  We came close to beating them in our first outing, losing in OT 2-1, but have never made it past them.

Saturday, we couldn't get past them either.  In a close game again, we lost in regulation play 2-1.  Our season ended Saturday on a bittersweet day.

These boys showed a tremendous amount of perseverance throughout their season.  They started the year as a B squad playing an A schedule and regularly got resoundingly beat.  But by the end of the season, to me they look just like an A squad, competing with the other A teams.  They still may not have won, but they challenged those teams and competed with them.  They could not be overlooked- they were an honest viable threat.

Congrats to the Peewee A-1 squad who went on to win the district championship game and will move on to the regional tournament.  Congratulations to our Peewee B-1 team who will also move on to play in their regional tournament!

Almost all of our Peewee A-2 hockey moms, with the cute mini-players on a stick made by Pam,  we used to cheer on our boys!

Our hockey family continues to surround us with prayers, love and encouragement.  Yesterday Colton's team surprised us with a fundraising project they have undertaken.  They are making gloves with "spirit fingers" in our team colors and selling them as a way to raise funds for our family.  I'm really touched and honored.  I have finally succumbed to a cold our family has been passing around.  I took cold meds yesterday that kept me "loopy" but able to breathe a little easier.  So I was rather subdued, but I hope they know how truly blessed we feel by their efforts.

Thank you Squirt White team!  (sorry for the less than ideal photos)

I'm getting ready for tomorrow.  It sort of feels like the first day of school.  A familiar setting with familiar faces, but a whole new set of lecture notes to decipher.  You know I'm bringing my "Cancer Fighting A game" regardless of the circumstances!

Thank you for all of your uplifting and encouraging notes. I find solace and comfort in each and every one of them and wish I could reply to each one of you that so steadfastly puts my name on your lips and offers it up to God. Blessings and love to all.
