Our fall so far has been less than fall-ish. Normal highs for today are in the 60's but we have been in the 40's. The frost man came for a visit, sprinkling frosty dust all over the ground this morning. I learned its very hard to capture the twinkling crystals. I was either blowing the photo out with only hints of light and glimmer, or catching the shadows of dark blobs. But by noon today, the sun began playing peek a boo with the clouds and I managed to play with it amongst the red and green leaves of the maple tree in the backyard. Its hard to believe all these photos came from one afternoon of fooling around.

I wrapped up in time for the clouds to grow dark and start leaking drops of rain. As much as I should embrace them, I won't until tomorrow perhaps. Because by then those pesky watery drops are scheduled to freeze into light flakes of the white stuff and I can hardly bring myself to call it by its name. For now it shall simply be known as the "S" word. *Sigh*

  1. I don't talk about that "s" word either !

the last few years, I started spelling it sneaux, just to pretty it up a bit, while I whined for days and days about it....

but for now, the colors keep us smiling !!

  2. Not to mention the "S" word, but we had it this afternoon...no fooling and it's only the first part of October!! We're in the teens now with tons of wind...hold on..it's coming your way!!
Most of our wonderful colorful leaves were blown away today so it was good to see them still on the tree...love it!

  3. Beth, let the whining commence as we just got our first dusting :) Sneaux!! Good one :) As long as I don't sound it out in my head.

Missy, a day of fall, and then it snowed and I just can't say the W word either.

Alicia, you are so right! It showed up in the middle of dinner and the whole restaurant groaned :) I was shocked at how quickly some of the leaves left today! Another day like that and we won't have any left either :)

  5. Vicky - your photos are stunning! Great depth of field, too. I'm sorry about the "S" word. Of course, Californians LONG for the S word because it feeds our rivers and lakes and we are in a drought. But we get it in the mountains and can get away from it when we want to. You guys shouldn't be gyped out of your fall!

Hopefully, if it comes, it will come to PASS. And maybe the warmer weather will come back. I can hope for you....

Oh, and BTW, I WOULD take the whole family. I have hardly ANY!

  6. Hi Vicky...

yes it is undeniably autumn for you and it sounds as if autumn has just rolled closer to winter...

    Happy days

  7. Savor these photos. Sounds like your autumn days are fading.

Snow always seems so magical to me but I'm sure when you live in it for a few months of the year it does become rather inhibiting.

We finally had some sun today.

  8. Gitz, oh yeah, not only coming but "S" is totally here :)

Robynn, its the whole package with the S that is troubling I think... its the cold, low to no sunlight, slippery/icy roads, and never ending season of all the aforementioned... it'd be a whole 'nother thing if it were just S :)

Delwyn, ugh, say it isn't so. Sorry to be so lackluster about it, but if you follow me through a good ole Minnesota winter just once, you might get an idea of why this isn't the best news :)

Liss, I can hardly believe this was yesterday, because its a totally different look out my window today! Glad you got some sun, enjoy a little for me:)

  12. Jackie, its fun watching your talent grow adn hopefully any something I passed along will be of use to you :)

Janine, thank you for the kind and uplifting words! Please know I continue to keep you in my prayers for this most uncertain journey :)

Jill, apparently not... it looks like s covered pumpkins and winter coats for costumes at Halloween!

Robin, some of our trees dropped green leaves... they never had a chance to change... but this tree is holding steady and I am counting it as a blessing... fall in my backyard so I don't completely miss out on it!
