Jasper's Theater, Park Rapids, MN.

We spent the weekend in Park Rapids with my in-laws again. The weather was cool and semi-sunny on Saturday and drizzly and overcast and cool by Sunday. But the weather didn't dampen our spirits! We were treated with tickets to Jasper's Theater Saturday night.

The show at the theater is billed as "music, magic, comedy and great family entertainment." But part of what makes it so special is that the cast comprises 4 generations of the owner, Lynette (Johnson) Guida's family. A family tree is provide in the program so that you can figure out all the relations. And in a few key spots are friends from around the region. My in-laws also happen to be friends with several of the performers and have gone to the show for the past several years.

By all accounts it was everything it was billed as and much more! The songs they performed were taken from the "Great American Songbook," and are meant to take you on a journey through some of our most memorable American musical history. In addition, Jack Sand, a weatherman I grew up watching on our local tv station, performed magic tricks, and "Auntie Kreamsaugen" told humorous stories in a thick Scandinavian accent.

The show contained gospel, country, rock and showtune songs. There was tap and ballet and jazz dances performed. And the music was first rate! The fiddler was 13, and the rising star of the show, as he has only played fiddle for two years having taught himself to play. What I wouldn't do for a fraction of his talent! But he also drums, and plays the guitar. Most of the performers are very multi-talented. Our boys were enthralled from start to finish and the only things they wanted to know when it was over was when could they go back!

This last photo is the big catch of the day! I think the boys lasted in the boat all of 30 minutes but we heard them shout wildly as they got off the boat and checked their minnow trap. It "caught" two minnows. Nolan was convinced we could bring them home. We couldn't get him to think differently until I gently reminded him they were "babies" taken from their mother. Reluctantly he got up the next morning and released them back into the lake. Whew :)
