We jumped at the chance to visit our neighbor's lake last week. We can't seem to get enough. We shoved swimsuits and towels, sunscreen and snacks into the Prius and drove a quick 45 minutes to the lake. We had to be back for hockey at 6.

As soon as we arrived at the cabin we jumped in the boat with a gaggle of kids and headed for a hidden adventure known to the locals as "the island." The secret hidden amongst the trees is a rope swing. A platform with two differing heights has been built into the side of the hill. You make your way up the steep embankment and choose your fate. The lower platform for the adventurous ones, or the top platform for the daredevils.

With my small camera, it was a challenge to catch all the action.  I managed a few well timed shots.  Colton, who is even below adventurous on the platform scale, delighted in the soft sand, burying his feet and wiggling his toes.  We left the island with a promise to return one day.

We rode back to the cabin where I put my camera down, climbed on a  floatie and drank in the sun.  The time flew by.  The kids skipped rocks.  They found clams and shells in the water.  Nolan swam.  Colton waded.  And both had to be dragged away when it was time to leave.

It was a wonderfully relaxing afternoon.  We felt so lucky to be invited down. Thank you to the Mohr family for allowing us to enjoy a small slice of your lake paradise. And allowing us to escape the memory laden rooms of our house for yet another day.

Colton: Mom, if we get another dog, I have the perfect name.

Me: Really, what?

C: How about Dakota II.

Me: (Big gulp) Um, no. Do you have any others names?

C: Yes, how about "Christopher" (his little friend's name)

Me: (giggling now): Um, I don't think so... think of some of your favorite things and maybe you'll come up with a good one...

C: Okay, I've got it! TARGET! You said favorites, and Target is my favorite store.

Me: Uhhhh, well, maybe. We'll think about it okay?

  1. I am with Colten (Mr Gorgeous smiles) - TARGET sounds a great name!!! Love your pictures - wonderful memories to keep of happy summer times too. What kind of camera do you have Vicky? You really do have a talent.

  2. Target!!!! Oh this makes me giggle! If we're going with favorite things I suppose Marshmallow Creme would be my #1 choice but I'm going with Target for a close second!
Have been thinking of all of you like crazy. (Hugs)
Those pictures are so beautiful. The lake is just amazing. You know we've started school here so I love seeing your summer in full swing...
Praying that this week will be less heavy...love you

  4. The placid lake and the serene environment makes a wonderful vacation. All the pictures have come out so nice. I find the black and white one the best. Some timing that Vicky! And if you thought that your son is below adventurous, think again! I'm even lower :)

  5. Lilly, I have photog hubby's Nikon D-100. I'm a bit spoiled in the camera department and get lots of tips too on how to use it :)

Robin, I am so grateful for your prayers, and I do think we are adjusting to this new normal a bit. Love you too :)

Stephanie, I got a little lucky I think, as slow as the camera was and with the intermittent light :)

Stillness, are we to call you Tranquility now? I'm afraid I join you in the less than adventurous feeling :)

  7. You can continue calling me Stillness. Tranquility is fine by me too but it's a wee bit difficult to type me thinks :)

  8. Looks like a great day to be at the lake! We need to take every day of "summer" that we can - with the floods, the cold weather, the rain -- well I guess every "perfect" summer day is a real treat and meant to be thorougly enjoyed.

Christopher would think it was so cool that he had a dog named after him - although when I tried to tell him all he said was "Colton's dog died - that's sad" (I guess he listens along the way - I showed him your blog and told him about Dakota once - he apparently got it) - when I said Colton wants to name another dog "Christopher" he was pretty insistent about the "I am Christopher" (and then it went into Fletcher is a dog, Christopher is a good boy, I am not Fletcher, I am Christopher -- ok so maybe he didn't totally get that one). Then I said "How about Target" which launched him into his usual anti shopping tirade about how he wanted to stay home and play, not go to Target, etc -- he is such an anti-shopper (got that from his father, not his mother). Anyhow, I think if he got to go and see Target the dog that would be ok -- apparently Target the store - well, not last night....

  9. Liss, Target seems to be a popular pick, maybe we'll consider it :) The tree swing seemed very popular!

Stillness, whew, yes I had a tough time with Tranquility :)

Kristi, obviously his vocabulary is expanding! How cute that he carries on that much of a conversation :) Can't wait to hear it for myself.
