where the girls go barefoot

When I was 3 or 4 it was decided I could benefit from corrective shoes.  They came in colors of brown, black, or brown and black.  They had square, boxed toes, hard leather sides and bottoms, and were just plain ugly.  Plus they were budget busters and we only went once a year to get a new prescription by the foot doc and then off to the specialty shoe store.  Oh how I hated them.  I had to wear them all year round, even in the summer. No tennis shoes... and worse, no bare feet for me.

Then one year the foot doc retired.

I was also due for my Kindergarten check-up.  So my regular doctor, Dr. Christu, had me walk for him.

And he scoffed.

"Sure, she's a little knock-kneed, but I have never heard of a brand of shoe to fix that!  If I were you, I'd take her to JCPenney's and buy her some Keds.  Heck, its summer, let her go barefoot if she wants- she's earned it."

Oh. My. Happy. Heck.

I've been a barefoot kind of gal ever since!

We spent part of our weekend down at Grandpa Jim's lake.  Grandpa was off visiting down South, so we had the place to ourselves.  Nolan tubed behind the boat.  The boys fished.  I took photos.

My Tykerb arrived yesterday and I took my first 5 pills last night... I had a restless night of sleep and  felt sick as soon as I stood up this morning. Thank goodness for Immodium and Zofran- and bible study which got me out the door this morning and was just the distraction I needed.

We have a jam-packed next few days.  We have 3 full days of Cully's Kids, our wedding anniversary and a wedding to attend that same day, and someone is having a Birthday next week.

Plus, its barefoot weather.  And that is worth everything and a whole lot more.

  3. Oh Dear Vicky, I wore the same shoes, the same ugly saddle shoes, plus a brace at night. UNTIL A Dr from Mayo said, Oh my gosh, take those off her feet and let her be a kid, buy her some black patton shoes that click when she walks….throw them in the garbage…..yep, I am knock-kneed, pigeon toed and flat footed….I fall….alot….kind of my, "Branding"…just me, that all…no biggy…a couple broken legs, lost 5 teeth, a couple broken feet…but no saddle shoes…..yaaaaaa!!!!!!
    and lots of bare feet!!!!

  4. Oh, how I remember corrective shoes! I had to wear those ugly saddle shoes because I had flat feet. Well, today, I still have them! :) Now, I love living in flip flops. Such freedom!

Hope all goes well with your new medicine and enjoy your busy days ahead.

    Beautiful flowers by the way.

    Hugs my friend, Eileen

  6. Okay. I'm laughing because that was a completely Forrest Gump story! hahaha I can see your "braces" falling away as you ran. I didn't have corrective shoes (though maybe I should have - I'm as duckfooted as a ballet dancer minus the BODY!) but I remember saddle shoes and not the cute brown and white type. I got solid dark brown and wore them year round. I remember crying when I was in third grade and begging my mom not to make me wear "boy" shoes. I am now a bonafide Bohemian and stay barefoot as much as I can. Even with my peripheral neuropathy I fight them on sensible shoes. My feet need to be FREE and so do yours!

I'm so sorry the new meds made you sick but, God love you, you just push yourself through to the next thing and refuse to be knocked down. May you be able to enjoy your week and celebrate your anniversary the way you want to. Congratulations. Love you.

    1. Thank you so much for your encouragement- the Forrest Gump reference made me laugh so- oh my- that is soooo fitting! Yes- Dr. P warned me "I would feel like I had the flu," but that they could give me all kinds of things to help with that and they've already called and checked in with me.

Now how is our Hannah? You have been on my mind so much- I'm anxiously awaiting an update of the relief variety!! You have been through enough and end needs to be in sight! Praying- praying.

  7. You know I loved the Oxford shoes..
No one would force me to wear them I just loved them. They felt so good on my feet.
My grand father also told me never to wear plastic shoes as they were bad for your feet and you know he was right. Today they say never cook in plastic because of the toxins and yet here people are wearing and sweating in rubber shoes.
I always wear strapless rubber shoes for comfort.
    Maybe I should change that.

    1. Ha- its funny how we forget about things like that. I will slip something on my feet before I have to drive, but even to just walk across the street to get the mail, I'm barefoot!

  8. Beautiful summertime photos.
Love Nolan's smile as he tubed on the lake.
So glad that your doctor released you from your corrective shoes. I wish I could have seen the smile on your little face as you knew you were going to be barefooted very soon!
This blog brought a smile to my face.

    1. Jackie- yes Nolan had the best time tubing- the weather was perfect and he can get in and out of the boat easily now and that helps. I so remember how delighted I was to hear I could get "normal" shoes! I think I got both flip-flops which we called thongs at the time, and tennis shoes :)

  9. You have beautiful feet! And oh, that photo of the purple flower...be still my beating heart! Lovely!!! The tubing photos were so much fun. I love how you take in life, Vicky. And I'm glad we got you up and at em. Even when you are feeling low you look more lively to me than what I see in the mirror. You must have a spunky guardian angel. :) You have some wonderful experiences upcoming. Congrats, and enjoy!

    1. Thank you Roxane- I was told by Han, the man who does most of my pedicures that my toes are symmetrical and even and that can be kind of uncommon and what makes them look decent. Oh I love what you said about the guardian angel- that could be so true and I never thought of that :) Thank you for your sweet and kind words always and I look forward to seeing you soon!

  13. i've been using the bracelet from Robin to remind me to pray for you and the Tykerb. i started praying a few days ago, thinking you would have had it before now. well, we'll just consider that preemptive prayer!

enjoy the fleeting barefoot days of summer in the north. you come visit, and you could be wearing flip flops into november!

  14. Now wouldn't that be a real treat- flip flops in November AND hanging with you :) I'm going to put that one on simmer and lets see what gets cooked up! Thank you for those prayers- yes it took a bit of work to get cleared for the Tykerb, but finally its here and I now have two doses in me... got through my diarrhea and nausea phase this morning and hopefully will cruise through this big night of ours :)

  15. Ugh. Well, it just plain stinks that you are feeling the side effects of the new drug so immediately. Hoping that the busy days will be enough to keep you distracted. It works sometimes. ;)
