The 30 day challenge
Are you up for a challenge? Join me in The 30 Day Challenge over at Robynn's Ravings.
Robynn is asking everyone who is interested to join in giving up fast food for 30 days. What you should know about Robynn is how well she has researched this topic. If you are concerned about your health, or are concerned with how much "junk" in the form of processed food your children are eating, this may be the boost you need to start eating healthier. Of course to sweeten the deal just a bit, Robynn is offering a $100 gift card to Amazon to one lucky participant.
My family is in. Growing up I had a multitude of "healthy" eating plans instituted by my mother. It started when I was five and she took out foods high in cholesterol... so long bacon and eggs! She then went on to take away anything with sugar. We thought she was a little over the top when she first suggested this one, but she could not have been more determined. Goodbye candy, cookies, cake, pie, ice cream, and sugar for our cereal. So long white bread. Hello green liquid vitamins. Blech. Hello whole wheat everything. Hello smoothies with homemade yougurt, bran, wheat germ, ground flaxseed and applesauce.
Thank goodness mom finally got a job working nights. From then on Dad was in charge and I was the chef. Mac-n-cheese and pizza became our staples for a brief time.
But an amazing thing happened over the years. I never fully went back. To this day, fast food doesn't make me feel very good. Fatty foods, processed foods, potato chips, soda... I can't eat any of these for very long without feeling awful. So, I don't very often.
The one thing that will cause me to go to a drive thru however, is when the kids are hungry and we're short on time. Coming up with an alternative to this will be the real challenge for me. But we're in! How about you? Are you up for the challenge?
Please visit Robynn for all the details and to officially enter. Either leave a comment, jump in and follow her, or post about it if you so choose on your own blog.

I wish it wasn't just for 30 days and it became a thing for life. We are into healthy eating too and abstain from all the things you mentioned and indulge in everything good. Very very occasionally is there pizza, fries, cola and chips. But somehow because it never became a habit, I don't crave any of it. Not even sweets. So even though I don't promise(since at times there is no other alternative, when you are hungry and are at the workplace) I'm in.
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome challenge, Vicky. I'm going to give it some thought. The hardest thing for me to give up would be my Coca Cola....I could.....but it would make everyone around me miserable....but I will give it serious thought...and get back to you on this...I promise.
ReplyDeleteSmiles,
Jackie
What a great idea! I've done challenges like this before, but never fast food. We would crash and burn on road trips, I'm afraid. Our little one is a lot easier to manage in her car seat if she has 'dench dies' (french fries) as part of lunch in her carseat!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear how you do! Good for you for wanting to improve the life of your family. :)
Tranquility, make sure to go to Robynn's and leave her a comment and if you blog about it you get an other entry, but its entirely up to you :) Thanks for participating!
ReplyDeleteJackie, oh I so understand about the coke/caffeine issue. I don't know if there is a concession for that or not? Leave a comment for Robynn and see... I know she'd love it if you'd even consider just passing on the fast food and choosing healthier options :)
I'm in. Was planning to start a vegetarian lifestyle this month anyway. Anyone read "The China Study"? Oh my - all the foods we love are the ones that seem to cause cancer. Bye bye dairy and meat.
ReplyDeleteI saw this at Robynn's and decided it would be cheating if I participated considering I can't get out to go get fast food even if I wanted it. :)
ReplyDeleteWow....we don't eat fast food much at all and when we do I feel nasty right after I eat it!
ReplyDeleteYay for this challenge :)
Vicky: I will be the lone loser here, but today I had a burger and fries at Mick's Office. It was AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am embarrassed that I have a gut of steal when it comes to junk....oops.
Oh Bonnie, that is what I love about you :) You just Dr. Phil it and tell it like it is! Mick's would be hard to turn down I'll admit.
ReplyDeleteVICKY I HAD EVEN SEEN THIS! I really have been burning the 2a.m. oil and have been out of ALL the loops! THANK YOU for your wonderful post and for doing this with me!!
ReplyDeleteAnd to any and all - this BEGINS with 30 days but will continue on for a year of healthy habits - 30 days at a time. Come one, come all!
